We're Off!

We're off! We've been in the Washington, DC area since Tuesday afternoon after leaving Denton on Friday. We had a great visit with Den's family after an uneventful, but very scenic drive, to Pennsylvania. We drove by Churchill Downs as we passed through Louisville, KY to take a picture of that famous horseracing track. As most of you know, we had to replace the transmission in my suburban before we left. Well, on Monday, we were heading to Den's Aunt and Uncle's for lunch, pulled over to return a phone call near a dairy farm when a dog charged our vehicle as Den started to accelerate and get back on the road. The dog rolled under the suburban and out the other side and kept on going. Bottom line, the dog disabled our transmission again, but we were able to get help quickly and made lunch afterall.

Den's Jezebel arrived in the parts trailer in the same condition it was loaded - pristine and ready to roll. After unloading, Jez had to sit outdoors last night and got soaked in the storms we have been periodically experiencing since our arrival in DC. Den was quickly able to reinstall the shelving in the parts trailer and began accepting boxes from the other convoy participatants as they began to arrive. About 8 vehicles and drivers arrived yesterday, including a vehicle shipped from France. More are expected today.

Last night, we had dinner with old friends. Den went to Officer Candidate School with Drew Moehlau here in the DC area at Ft. Belvoir, VA over 40 years ago. Drue and his wife, Marti, used to live in this area and had returned for a visit when we connected.

I'm sure most of you heard about yesterday's shooting at the Halocaust Museum and the death of a Capitol Guard. Today, we are waiting to hear if that event will have any impact on the convoy's plans to depart from the White House Ellipse on Saturday.

We received a tornado alert call yesterday for Denton County about the time we were leaving for dinner. We are thankful everyone is safe at home, but wish that we were there to help with the cleanup at David and Andrea's house. We understand that they sustained quite a bit of water damage as their house was not yet in the dry from the remodeling. Thanks to all who have been helping them! Love you, guys.

  2. Hi Marilyn! It is good to read your blog update. I sure wish we could have continued on with you guys (Oops, I mean y'all!). Have you been getting many new people who weren't pre-registered? We've been talking it up with our customers, encouraging them to join in if they can. Derek posted one convoy video on youtube. www.youtube.com/dlbensinger. Check it out when you have 5 minutes.
Have fun! I'm looking forward to reading more of your entries when you get time to write. (You must be exhausted if you are keeping up those long days!)

    Tell everyone Hi!

    Lida
